Who We Are

Mars-V is an ACTION AGAINST RAPE movement. It is a voluntary, non-profit making collaboration of diverse individuals who are experts and leading professionals in the various walk of life. We are Medical Practitioners, Lawyers, Policy Makers, Humanitarians, Journalists, Engineers, Accountants, Entrepreneurs, Activists… all sharing one common passion: For fair justice to be delivered to victims; For obsolete laws to be discarded and betters laws to be structured, implemented and executed.

Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

This collaboration stands for every purpose of working tenaciously together towards eliminating RAPE AND OTHER GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE RELATED ISSUES in our communities. Mars-V aims to get the systems to change, improve and amend where necessary, all laws surrounding rape, attempted rape, sexual violence, paedophilia, sexual abuse, false accusations of rape, physical abuse and violence. With a 3-pronged approach that questions

  • The Legal System – What is the role of the Judiciary in stating, interpreting and exercise the discretionary power to provide justice ensuring the victim does not become oppressed and that the offender faces the law squarely
  • The Executive System: Government policies, Ministries and Agencies – when and how are they required to play a role in the implementation of these laws and which supporting facilities should they provide?
  • The Communities – Families, communities, societies, religious and traditional leaders, community influencers, etc; what roles have they got to play in this fight against Rape and GBV.

Mars-V is also working to become a catalyst of sensitization and reorientation on behavioural changes in our homes, communities, and societies the on the criminalization of rape, shunning stigma, raising our kids right to respect the bodies and rights of others, watching what our kids say, do and who they spend time with, teaching our kids how to understand and speak up against inappropriate actions and trends.

Our Mission

To educate, empower and ignite sustainable long-lasting actions towards changing the rape culture, end the impunity of rape and other forms of sexual violence in Nigeria

We aim to have a very fierce credible national voice and national presence in addressing the following:

  • To get our system to change, improve and amend where necessary, all laws surrounding rape, attempted rape, sexual violence, paedophilia, sexual abuse, false accusations, etc. Death Sentences, castrations, life imprisonments, bails, fines – when and where should they each apply? Government policies, ministries and agencies – how do we need them to play a role in these laws and which supporting facilities can they provide?
  • To tenaciously engage our lawmakers and law influencers in appeals, discussions and advocacy for all our individual autonomous states to unanimously adopt the changed laws.
  • To strategically draft, engage and create a database of efficient professionals who would, based on their fields support this course at all times.
  • To become an action-driven task force that digs up, supports raised cases and pushes for the conclusion of rape cases ensuring justice is served.
  • To become a safe and secure haven of trust and confidentiality where victims can discreetly approach the group seeking for justice and also get physical, psychological and emotional support.
  • To become a catalyst of sensitization and reorientation on behavioural changes in our homes, communities and societies on the criminalization of rape, shunning stigma, raising our kids right to respect the bodies and rights of others, watching what our kids say, do and who they spend time with. Teaching our kids how to understand and speak up against inappropriate touches from families, communities, societies, religious and traditional leaders, community influencers, etc.
  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and a sickening high rise in brazen rape cases are becoming daily occurrences in the lives of our children and women in Nigeria.
  • We are struggling to get the laws changed on the legal punishment for rape, otherwise, sexual predators and rape perpetrators will keep destroying people’s lives without any serious consequences.
  • The existing laws are such that each state is autonomous in its dispensation of criminal laws.
  • We need to begin the unrelenting advocacy and tenacious movement for each state in Nigeria to adopt extremely harsh laws, execution and punishment for rape offenders.
  • The sad reality is that the existing laws that provide for a maximum life sentence are hardly being implemented anywhere.
  • Why do we not have convictions even under existing laws?
  • The child rights Act basically says life sentence automatically where domesticated – this is too vague and ineffective.
  • It might be difficult and slow for us to get 2/3rds of the National Assembly to vote for and pass these appropriately severe punishments into law. Even if this happens, it remains the independent right of each state to either adopt or ignore the bill if passed – at their own pace and convenience.
  • But we are hopeful that the father in every Governor, the parent in every lawmaker and policy influencer will support and help us protect our girls, boys and women from rapes and brutal violations
